Born in Busselton, Sue ventured off to have fun and adventure while travelling and working before settling down to marry a local farmer and have three children. Dairy farming is hard work and eventually Sue’s body suggested that she take a break. A melanoma was discovered and removed, her children were moving onward and upwards and leaving the nest and Sue felt that it was time to give back to the Busselton Community.
Sue became a Hospice Volunteer and with that came some extremely valuable training, life lessons and great rewards. It is a role she continues to serve in. In 2006 Sue became the Volunteer Facilitator of a cancer support group in Busselton where she undertook more training and guidance. This role gave her the opportunity to offer support to those in the face of hardship.
In 2013 Sue founded CANsurvive. Her passion is to share helpful information with the intent to empower others on a wellness journey so they can live their best life. Under Sue’s mentorship, CANsurvice quickly became an amazing group of incredible people. At any given time, there is laughter and tears, sharing of stories, refreshments and silence all of which combine to create a strong sense of belonging for CANsurvive members.
Sue knows that she lives in a beautiful area, and is proud to be a part of such a supportive and generous community
Born in South Africa, Karen moved with her family to a small island off the south coast of England. When her schooling years were behind her, she trained as a Nursery Nurse and transitioned to Social Work, before becoming a Teaching Assistant when her children were little. After further study, Karen started her career in teaching. Years later, Karen visited an old school friend in Busselton with her husband and their two girls. The family fell in love with this place and immigrated here in 2004.
Two years after moving to Busselton, Karen was diagnosed with cancer. Despite this, she embraced life fully and continued teaching for seven more years. By 2013, she had completed additional training as a nutritional coach. For some time she balanced teaching, part-time work as a health coach and family life. By 2020, Karen transitioned into health coaching full-time. She is involved with the Paperbark Wellness Project and CANsurvive. Karen is dedicated to empowering others to see and understand their ability to live a rich and fulfilling life.
Karen thrives on challenges. Although she had been living with metastatic cancer for twelve years, she undertook a 3700km solo bike riding adventure to raise awareness and funds for brain cancer research in 2022. She began her journey at the Busselton Jetty and rode to Eucla and back again.
Claudia was born in Germany and followed her childhood dream to live in Australia, where she settled in Western Australia. Claudia had encountered many difficulties in life, but then through a challenging illness, she turned her life around.
Claudia’s education includes training as a recreational gymnastic coach, an apprenticeship as a clerk in publishing for a German newspaper, a few years of aviation experience as a flight attendant, kinesiology training, a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education, meditation facilitation and her latest interest, studies in Ayurveda. Claudia has been a valued volunteer in many different roles at her children’s school, with local community projects and by supporting various groups in their meditation needs.
Health, life and death with a dash of philosophy have been Claudia’s passion from an early age. She is grateful for the sense of purpose and connection she encounters, her ability to follow her inner guide, a commitment to learning and the sharing of life-experiences with each other.
CANsurvive is a Busselton-based monthly support group for anyone affected by cancer. Supporters are welcome.
Established in 2013 and endorsed by Solaris Cancer Care, it offers a safe space for sharing experiences, encouragement, strategies, mutual support and pumpkin scones. Sometimes guest speakers are invited to provide insights and valuable information to empower attendees.
Solaris Cancer Care is a community-based healthcare organisation. Founded in 2001, they are the first of their kind in Australia, and they offer support, information, education, and complementary therapies to cancer patients and their primary carers.
